Additional Handling Surcharges (AHS) are extra charges applied by most transport companies, including UPS, when a parcel cannot be handled in the usual way and requires special handling or complementary packaging during transport.
This usually occurs when the parcel has characteristics that prevent automated handling and hinder the logistics process, either because it has an irregular shape or because it has inadequate packaging, with loose or protruding parts.
A parcel with these characteristics could become entangled in conveyor belts, cause jams on chutes or ramps, damage sorting equipment in warehouses, affect other goods, or even put the transport company's staff at risk.
Please consult the packaging conditions you must comply with to send irregularly shaped, round, tubular or cylindrical items with PayPal Shipping.
Important
If the carrier classifies the shipment as irregular (for example round or cylindrical items, including, without limitation, tubes, cans, buckets, barrels, tires, drums, pails and others), the parcel may be returned to the sender or delivered to its destination with an additional handling surcharge, which will be applied, and automatically billed to the person who purchased the shipping label.
Special handling of irregularly shaped shipments may result in:
- Delays in loading and unloading times.
- Delays in sorting processes, as manual handling is required.
- Less optimised stowage.
- Greater difficulty in planning and organising deliveries
